Whistler designed a lighthouse that would withstand the relentless forces of the Chesapeake Bay. Its foundation was a massive granite crib, sunk into the bed of the bay. Atop the crib, a 52-foot cast-iron tower was erected, topped by a lantern room and a powerful Fresnel lens.
Guardians of the Bay
For over a century, lighthouse keepers and their families lived and worked at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. They tended the light, maintained the tower, and provided a vital service to mariners.
Life at the lighthouse was often harsh and lonely. The keepers endured storms, isolation, and the constant threat of danger. Yet, they remained steadfast in their duty, guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
A New Era
In the mid-20th century, the advent of automation brought about a new era for lighthouses. Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse was automated in 1964, and the last keeper left the station.
Although automated, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse remained a vital aid to navigation. Its powerful light continued to guide ships safely through the Chesapeake Bay, even as the world around it changed.
Preserving a Legacy
In 1976, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the U.S. Coast Guard transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse Preservation Society in 2008.
The Preservation Society has embarked on an ambitious project to restore the lighthouse to its former glory. Volunteers have replaced the roof, repaired the tower, and installed new exhibits. The lighthouse is now open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into the fascinating history of this maritime icon.
