The Kokoda Track is a 96-kilometer (60-mile) trail that winds through the rugged Owen Stanley Mountains. It was built by the Australian government in the 1930s as a way to connect the north and south coasts of Papua New Guinea.

In July 1942, the Japanese invaded Papua New Guinea and quickly captured the town of Kokoda. The Australians responded by sending a force of 2,000 men to retake the town.

The Australian force quickly found itself outmatched by the Japanese. The Japanese were better equipped and had more experience fighting in jungle terrain. The Australians were also hampered by the lack of supplies and the difficult conditions.

Despite the odds, the Australians fought bravely. They inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese and slowed their advance. The campaign lasted for two months and ended in a Japanese victory. However, the Australians had achieved their objective of delaying the Japanese advance and giving the Allies time to prepare for a counteroffensive.

The Kokoda Track Campaign was a significant event in Australian history. It was the first time that Australian troops had fought a major battle against the Japanese. The campaign also showed the resilience and determination of the Australian people.
