Thomson was born in Scotland in 1855. He came to the United States in 1873 and began working in the mines of Colorado. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by the early 1890s, he was one of the most respected mining engineers in the country. In 1893, he was appointed general manager of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, one of the largest mining companies in the world. Under Thomson's leadership, Anaconda became one of the most successful mining companies in the United States, and Thomson himself became known as the "Copper King."
In addition to his work at Anaconda, Thomson also served as president of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Thomson's contributions to the mining industry were recognized with numerous awards, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. He died in 1934 at the age of 79.
